Newton's first law

 

Newton summarized Galileo's idea on motion as Newton’s 1st Law.

• An object at rest tends to stay at rest.
• An object in motion tends to stay in motion at constant speed in a straight line.

 

Newton's first law: A particle at rest, or moving in a straight line with a constant speed is in equilibrium.

 

What is equilibrium?

 

A particle is in equilibrium if it remains in its current state even if forces need to be added to accomplish this.
A particle is in equilibrium only if it remains stationary.
A particle is in equilibrium if it is not accelerating.

 

 

 

 

 

Newton’s 1st law is often referred to as the Law of Inertia.
