Work-Energy Balance & Conservation of Energy - Example Problem 7.6-5

A 4-kg collar is released from rest from point A on the curved rod shown. If friction is neglected, determine (a) the velocity of the collar at point B just prior to engaging the spring and (b) the distance x that the spring deforms before the collar again comes to rest at point C. If an experiment is conducted and it is determined that the spring actually deforms x = 0.05 m, calculate (c) the work done by friction over the length of the collar’s entire travel from point A to point C.

Given:
  • m = 4 kg
  • No friction
  • r = 0.5 m
  • k = 15 kN/m
  • vA = 0
  • vC = 0

Find:
  • vB
  • x
  • UFf if x = 0.05 m
