Universal Gravitation - Example Problem 1.4-4

A 75-kg astronaut standing on a scale on the moon's surface determines that she weighs 123 N. If the moon is known to have a mass of 7.347 x 1022 kg, determine the moon's radius at the astronaut's current location.

Given:

  • m = 75 kg
  • Wmoon = 123 N
  • mmoon = 7.347 x 1022 kg

Find: rmoon

Use the law of universal gravitation to determine the radius of the moon. G can be found in Appendix C.
