Calculus deals with time rates of change.

 

• Velocity = time rate of change of position
• Acceleration = time rate of change of velocity

 

Why, when studying dynamics, is it important to understand derivatives and integrals?

 

Derivatives are useful in determining time rates of change.
A derivative is used to find acceleration given velocity.
An integral is used to find velocity given acceleration.
Integrals are useful in determining the accumulation of quantities that change with time.
